Literacy FAQs

What teaching materials do you use when instructing my child in literacy?

We used the Leveled Literacy Intervention by Fountas & Pinnell.   The Fountas & Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention is a powerful, short-term intervention, that provides daily, intensive, small-group instruction, which supplements classroom literacy teaching. LLI turns struggling readers into successful readers with engaging leveled books and fast-paced, systematically designed lessons.

Who provides the instruction?

In our literacy room, we are proud to offer three trained teachers.
Mrs. Russo    =   Literacy Specialist
Mrs. Brewer  =  Special Education & Literacy Interventionist
Ms. Bowie      =  K-8 Teacher & Literacy Interventionist

When is my child taken for instruction?

Children are NOT taken during direct instruction time. They are taken during a time when they are doing independent work.

How often does my child receive instruction?

Students are seen between 4-5 days a week for 25-30 minutes at a time.

How big are the groups?

Groups are no larger than three in a group. There is strong research that indicates that intervention provided in groups larger than three is minimally effective.

Is my child in Title Ia for the entire year?

As soon as children are “at the average of the class,” they are dismissed from Title Ia services. It is our goal to bring children in, provide intensive instruction, and get them out as soon as possible.

Will my child receive Title Ia every year?

We service the bottom 20% of each grade level (K-2.) This means that depending on our student base, we may have the same or different children in the bottom 20%. Once in Title Ia does not guaranty a space in our program for their entire time at PCS.
